Tillich's Definition of a Philosopher

I liked this a lot, so I thought I would share it with all of you.

‘It is always a driving force in the depths of his being that makes the philosopher a philosopher.  The question of ultimate reality is produced not by a theoretical interest in abstraction from the totality of man’s being but by this rare union of passion and rationality…His existence is involved in his question; therefore, he asks the question of ultimate reality – the question of being-itself.  On the other hand, the existential element does not swallow the theoretical.  In contrast to the saint, prophet, poet, the philosopher’s passion for the infinite pours into his cognitive function.  He wants to know; he wants to know what being means, what is structures are, and how one can penetrate into its mystery.’ – p19-20
